Massa Files for Republican Slating Endorsement

February 8, 2010 Leave a comment

Dear Fellow Republicans,

It is with great pride and joy that I convey the following to you today. As I shared with you last week, after Scott Newman spent a great deal of time talking to members of the community at large, the legal community and the party, he strongly recommended Mark Massa to be our candidate for Marion County Prosecutor. After deliberating regarding the decision to enter the race, Mark has decided to seek your endorsement and has submitted his slating application and slating fee today.  He is also filing papers to open an Exploratory Campaign Committee.  We are lucky to have such an outstanding candidate step forward to lead our 2010 ticket.  I look forward to seeing you at slating.

Tom John

Chairman, Marion County Republican Party

Statement From Mark Massa

“After much deliberation and consultation with family, friends and community leaders, I have decided to submit my name for consideration by precinct committeemen and women to be their slated candidate for Marion County Prosecutor in 2010.  I will abide by the decision of the convention and, if slated, will resign my position on the Governor’s staff upon filing for the May primary next week.  I look forward to addressing the convention this Saturday and discussing in more detail my experience, ideas and motivation for seeking the most important public safety office in our community.”

MEDIA ADVISORY

Mark Massa will be available for comment and interviews at Marion County Republican Party Headquarters from 10 am to noon on Tuesday, February 9.  He will also be available that day by appointment.  All requests to be directed to Kyle Walker at 514-1276.

Scott Newman Recommends Mark Massa for Prosecutor

February 4, 2010 1 comment

Dear Fellow Republicans,

As I shared with you a few days ago, I asked Scott Newman to help us after the withdrawal of our friend Helen Marchal from the Prosecutor’s race. As you all know, Scott has an amazing breadth and depth of experience in public safety. He has served us well as Marion County Prosecutor and Public Safety Director, in addition to other positions, and is one of the most respected men in criminal law in our state.

When Scott answered this call, I asked him to search our legal community and seek input regarding potential candidates for prosecutor and bring us his conclusions. In the course of his mission, Scott spoke to dozens of people throughout our community and sought input from many of our brightest and most community oriented citizens. This morning, he gave me the report that follows and that I now share with all of you.

It is now incumbent on all of you, the activists who are the heart and soul of our party, to review Scott’s recommendations and decide whether we should act on them. This coming Monday is the filing deadline for slating for this race and we must have the BEST candidate to put forward for this important office. I believe we can do so. Scott believes that he has identified that person. Please share your thoughts with Scott, me and our fellow party members over the coming days until and at slating and let’s get ready to win this race in November. Thank you for all that you do.

Tom John,
Chairman
Marion County Republican Party

——————————-
A hard copy of the following letter from Scott Newman was hand delivered to Chairman Tom John on Thursday, February 4. The letter is reprinted in its entirety below.

Dear Mr. Chairman:

Recently, in light of the unexpected withdrawal of the only Republican candidate seeking the Party’s endorsement for the office of Prosecutor, you asked me to survey the landscape and recommend the person that I believed would be the best possible candidate to represent our Party in seeking this important post in the fall election.

In so doing, I assert no special authority, only an adequate level of experience to render me well-versed on what’s out there in terms of talent, experience, and character. With some 24 years of involvement in both the County GOP and in the pursuit of a public safety career in Marion County at all levels, federal, state and local, I feel most confident in what I report to you today.

I am pleased to recommend Mark Massa, whom I believe and in fact know to be the best candidate we could possibly field in the fall election. Note that I did not say, “the best candidate under the circumstances.” I truly believe that while the circumstances leading us along this somewhat unaccustomed path to slating were not ideal, the end result may well be the very best candidate that could have been chosen-under any circumstances.

Mark Massa has served with distinction as a deputy prosecutor in Marion County, as Chief Counsel to the Prosecutor when I held that office, as an Assistant United States Attorney, and as Senior Counsel to the Governor of the State of Indiana. He has prosecuted the full range of offenses, from a traffic infraction to sending a killer to death row.

Our Prosecutor must ensure that criminals receive their just punishment. He must provide inspiring and trustworthy leadership in the broader struggle for quality of life in our neighborhoods. He must with uncommon grace combine just the right measures of toughness, accountability, common sense, and fairness. He must feel the kind of compassion for the plight of crime victims that moves him, not to abject sympathy or showy diatribe, but to swift and appropriate action. All of these qualities, Mark possesses. I have seen them. I have benefitted from them during much of my career. I have relied upon him and trusted him, and so has our Governor and many others. Given a chance, he will work hard to earn the trust and confidence of the precinct committeemen and the voters of Marion County, just as he has done at so many critical times and places over the years.

It would be well, also, if our Prosecutor candidate were to have some experience in political campaigns. Mark Massa has never run for office, but he has assisted and directed others, including candidates for Mayor and Prosecutor, and the State Republican Party Chairman, in mounting effective political campaigns at the grass roots and on the airwaves. He has done this work in a manner beyond reproach, which has won him respect from people of all political stripes, allies and adversaries alike. He is prepared, has the contacts, the cool resolve, the volunteer and financial base, and the sense of purpose that he will need to get this job done, with our unity and our help.

Tom, thank you for the privilege of serving you in this capacity. I have had the pleasure of reconnecting with so many people who care about this all-important post, with its enormous measure of authority and therefore, of public trust. I have used up nearly all of the minutes loaded into that cell phone you gave me to make it easier for people to get in touch and share their ideas!

The result of those discussions has been unequivocal and clear: we would do best to engage Mark Massa in this election as our candidate for Marion County Prosecutor. I am optimistic that he is ready to heed the call. And, if the precinct committeemen choose to slate him, we must skip the end-zone dance and get right to work – every one of us – to ensure that this good man, turned strong candidate, is allowed to become the people’s trusted, respected, and elected Prosecutor.

Warmest regards,

SCOTT C. NEWMAN
Director of Public Safety, 2008-2009
Marion County Prosecutor, 1995-2002
Assistant U.S. Attorney, 1989-1994
Marion Co. Dep. Prosecutor, 1986-1988
